Volunteer Spotlight: Behind the Smiles at the Salon

News
December 4, 2023

Have you ever been to Pine Haven when the hair salon is open? When you walk past, you can't help but smile, listening to the joyful chatter and laughter. Janice and Mary volunteer their time helping get residents to their appointments at our Haven Drive campus salon. They both also help with other special activities.

Janice Ten Haken (Left) has volunteered for six years since retiring from Pine Haven. She knows that the residents need assistance and the employees are very busy. Janice volunteers every other Wednesday morning at the Haven Drive Campus Salon. She enjoys visiting with and getting to know the residents. Most of them chat about their lives when they were younger. She hopes to bring a little happiness to their day!

Mary Ongna (right) was encouraged by a friend, another volunteer, to help transport residents to their salon appointments. Retired life was more than summer gardening and winter shoveling. Once she started walking the halls with the residents talking, hearing their life stories, and singing hymns as they strolled to the salon, she was hooked on transporting! She has been volunteering for four years. She also plays the piano for hymn sings at our Oostburg campus, a highlight for her.

Everyone she meets in the corridors has a friendly "Hello" and a smile. The girls in the salon are exceptional, fun, friendly, and caring of resident's needs and feelings. She is thankful to Ruth for saying, "I think you would enjoy volunteering at Pine Haven - why don't you give it a try?" She was right!!

Thank you, Janice and Mary! The residents, beauticians, and staff are thankful for your time!
