Freely You Have Received; Freely Give

What are you most thankful for in your life?” It’s one of my favorite questions to ask our senior saints in this season of Christmas. Their answers often include everyday blessings like waking up each morning, enjoying three good meals a day, and the love of family and friends. But many also speak of profound blessings, such as God’s faithfulness through life’s storms, the forgiveness of sins, and the promise of eternal life—a joyful celebration when we are reunited with all those who have gone before us in the Lord! These sacred conversations remind us that God’s call to “give thanks” and “rejoice always” comes more naturally when we fix our eyes on His wonderful goodness and grace.

How have you experienced God’s goodness in your life? One of the most familiar refrains in the Psalms is, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His steadfast love endures forever!” The Psalms speak honestly to every season of life—good and bad—but amidst life’s twists and turns, we can take comfort in God’s unchanging goodness no matter what our circumstances, knowing that

God is always working for the good of those who love Him.

The Christmas season often distracts us from what is most important, burdening us with stress and deepening our sense of loss and disconnection. Instead, let us be encouraged to look to the goodness of God—to be renewed and refreshed as we not only enjoy His blessings but, even more, give thanks to the Blesser. And as God’s Word reminds us, as we have so freely received, let us also freely share God’s many blessings with others.

“Thank God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
