At Pine Haven, we are committed to creating an environment where residents experience not only care but also meaningful connections. One of the most rewarding ways we achieve this is through intergenerational programming, bringing together people of all ages to share experiences, laughter, and wisdom.
We partner with local organizations and schools like Campus Life, RCS Empowers, Sheboygan Christian School, Dinkazoo, Sheboygan Lutheran High School, Local 4H Clubs, St Paul Sheboygan Youth Group, and Oostburg High School to create opportunities for our residents to interact with children and young adults. These partnerships allow us to create meaningful connections and positive experiences for both parties.
The Power of Intergenerational Connections
There’s something truly special about seeing our residents interact with younger generations. Staff often share how the energy in the room shifts when kids visit—there’s a sense of joy and vitality that’s contagious. It’s not just the kids who benefit, either. After spending time with younger visitors, our residents often seem to have more energy and a brighter outlook.
For younger participants, these experiences offer a chance to gain a deeper understanding of aging and develop empathy. Recently, students from Sheboygan Christian School participated in a Discovery Term at Pine Haven, learning about careers in aging and engaging in activities with our residents. Their reflections showcase the power of these connections:
- "I'm most thankful for learning more about the elderly, and I feel like I can be more considerate and empathetic to everyone by trying to 'put myself in their shoes.'" — Vinny
- "The connections with amazing elderly people who are wise, witty, and caring, and how they love to pass their knowledge to the next generation." — Joey
- "I am very thankful for the wonderful people I met. I met a woman who really showed me how, even though she's getting old, she still enjoys life and enjoys being around the people she knows." — Izzy
- "From the last few days, I've been the most thankful for being able to build relationships with the residents. I will remember the first day of being shy and learning names vs. the last day of saying hi to people you know and building onto that relationship." — Kitsia

Why It Matters
In today’s world, where technology often takes the place of face-to-face interaction, bridging the gap between generations is more important than ever. At Pine Haven, we see firsthand how these connections improve the well-being of both our residents and the younger people who visit. For seniors, spending time with younger generations helps reduce feelings of isolation and brings a sense of purpose. For kids, it’s a chance to develop empathy, learn life lessons, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Creating a Space for Connection
At Pine Haven, we strive to create a community where love, respect, and connection are at the heart of everything we do. Whether through games, storytelling, or simply sharing a moment, these connections bring joy and meaning to everyone involved.
As we celebrate the relationships that bring so much joy to our residents, we also celebrate the younger generations who bring their energy, curiosity, and love to Pine Haven. These connections remind us all that no matter our age, we can make a difference in someone’s life.
